PO Box 191,
Columbia, SC 29202-0191

Project Description:
TKA along with our proposed team members have performed the CEI services on recent SCDOT projects such as the SC 170, Design-Build, Widening and Bridge Replacements over the Broad and Chechessee River in Beaufort County.
TKA is currently under contract with the SCDOT to provide complete Quality Assurance (QA) inspection services for bridge, roadway, and asphalt and material sampling and testing for the $81 million, SC 170, 12.5 mile widening and bridge replacement project. This 3 year contract has been extended due to the contractor’s failure to complete the construction in the contract time and includes up to 16 full-time QA inspectors and administrative staff who perform the daily QA and inspection services for this entire project. The roadway portion of the project consists of 3 sections approximately 10.5 miles in combined length and includes clearing and grubbing, mucking, backfilling and fine grading prior to the asphalt placement. The bridge portion of the project consists of one bridge approximately 8,000 feet in length over the Broad River and a bridge approximately 1,700 foot long over the Chechessee River. These bridges have concrete decks supported by bulb-tee girders with multi span continuous units with post tension deck systems. Foundations on the bridges are drilled shaft piers in 30 to 50 foot of water with double, flared hammerhead pier caps.
This multi phased project also required the QA and inspection services for traffic control, erosion control, earthwork, drainage and base, asphalt and asphalt plant. F&ME has provided all QA sampling and testing and CSL (Cross Hole Sonic Logging) testing and verification of drilled shafts. Triplett-King and F&ME have teamed together and established a full service, materials testing laboratory near the project in Cherry Point. This has assisted the SCDOT in QA/QC testing and verification of material strengths and properties.
Mr. Bill Gurry of Gurry & Associates has assisted Triplett-King and the SCDOT with complex construction scheduling and contractor schedule submittals. Mr. Gurry has been instrumental in the Primavera schedule reviews to keep the SCDOT informed on project progress.
TKA and our team members have also participated in all of the SC 170 Partnering sessions with the contractors, subcontractors, designers, SCDOT, FHWA and Beaufort County staff and have assisted the SCDOT in contractor submittals, non conformance reports and material issues. Triplett-King staff reports directly to the SCDOT Resident Engineer on site, Mr. Garvin Moeller.
The project was phased into five stages. Stages one and two were in the southbound lanes of I-95 and stages three and four were in the northbound lanes. Staged five consisted on installation of new permanent markings throughout the project.
