Project Description:
Triplett-King has teamed with United Contractors, U.S. Constructors, and Cape Romain Contractors for this first of a kind, design-build project consisting of the design and construction of 33 bridges located throughout the state. 20 of the bridges followed SCDOT Maintenance standards which included cored slab spans ranging from 40 to 60 feet. The remaining 13 bridges were design bridges including flat slab spans, 70 ft. cored slab spans, and 120 ft. bulb tee spans. Triplett-King was responsible to deliver the design and construction plans for all 20 of the maintenance bridges, 8 of the design bridges, and provide construction inspection services for 11 bridges.
In conformance with the bid/award, 20 bridges must be constructed within 350 days. This aggressive project schedule demanded bridge plans to be produced within a short amount of time. Triplett-King also managed the other design team members including those responsible for roadway, environmental, geotechnical, hydrology, and right-of-way services. Close coordination with these team members was critical in meeting the aggressive schedule and meeting budget. The first-time use of 70 ft. cored slab spans also provided a cost savings to the SCDOT and reduced the impact from bents located in the waterway. In addition, Triplett-King’s construction inspection staff located throughout the state enabled manpower to be available at multiple sites at one time to meet the contractor’s needs. Triplett-King recently won the 2006 ACEC-SC Honor Award for this innovative, accelerated design-build project.
