Project Description:
Mr. Jim Triplett, P.E. & United Contractors built the US 1/601 Bridge over the Wateree River in Kershaw County in 1997. This $ 7.56 million, design-build, bridge replacement project consisted of two, 436 ft., 4-span, continuous for live load, prestressed concrete bulb tee beams (63”) for the main spans over the river and 1080 ft. of continuous flat slab approach spans. The total length of bridge is 1952 feet. The main spans are supported on drilled shaft foundations and the approach spans on 18” square, prestressed, concrete piles.
Merritt King served as the Project Manager and Project Engineer and his duties included the planning, conceptual design, bridge type studies and alternates, proposals for design-build selection, final bridge design and plans, and shop drawing reviews, while coordinating with several subconsultants, including F&ME Consultants.
This design won the successful design-build bid for award and the bridge project won the AGC’s Pinnacle Award in 1999.
