Project Description:
Triplett-King & Associates performed the preliminary and final design for the I-95 Bridge Widening over S-26. The design consisted of median widening of the existing 190 foot, three span, two lane dual bridges. An additional 64 feet of bridge width joined the independent dual bridges into a single bridge through continuous reinforcement tied to the new bridge deck. The longitudinal joint and associated maintenance concerns were eliminated. The outdated post and beam bridge rail on the existing bridges was also replaced with the SCDOT current concrete bridge barrier. Seismic restrainers were also incorporated into the new bridge widening, and designed to withstanding the seismic forces associated with the entire bridge. Construction staging allowed for traffic to be maintained on site. A concrete overlay applied to the entire bridge deck surface improved rideability and drainage characteristics with drainage accommodated in the center median. Drilled shaft foundations were more cost effective than pile supported footings and were used at the interior bents.
